A high-speed chase through Charleston’s East End on Friday ended with the arrest of three men police say robbed a bank in Marmet.
One of the men is Anthony Artrip, a serial bank robber who, at one time, was on the Top 15 Most Wanted List of the U.S. Marshals.
The men escaped from the Edgecombe County Detention Center in North Carolina on Thursday, stole a truck and then headed to West Virginia, said Sgt. Steve Cooper, chief of detectives for the Charleston Police Department.
At about 9 a.m., a white man with long hair, a green toboggan and orange flip-flops robbed the City National Bank at 9005 MacCorkle Ave., according to Metro 911 dispatchers. He was seen running toward Kanawha City with a Kroger shopping bag full of money.
A witness told police he saw the man get into a white older- model pickup and drive off.
The truck was spotted speeding west on Interstate 64 a short time later. Police in Charleston were told to be on the lookout for the men.
Less than an hour later, a man fitting the robber’s description was pumping gas into a white pickup with two other men at the Stop- N-Go at the corner of Ruffner and Washington Street East about 9 a.m.
A Charleston police officer spotted him and tried to talk to him. The man quickly jumped in the white truck and sped off, Cooper said.
Police chased the men along Kanawha Boulevard, Pennsylvania Avenue and throughout the East End, Cooper said.
Sheriff Mike Rutherford was on his way to a 10 a.m. news conference when he saw the suspects’ pickup fly by him on Kanawha Boulevard.
Rutherford also joined the chase. He said eight sheriff’s deputies, four detectives, four or five West Virginia State Police troopers and several Charleston police officers took part in the chase and capture. “There were dozens of officers there,” he said.

ROYAL Bank of Scotland is axing another 3,500 jobs under plans to more than halve the bank’s administration centres across the UK.
Part-nationalised RBS said the job losses would go across back office and IT functions in the business services arm – coming on top of the division’s 9,000 job cuts announced last year.
The bank, which is 83% owned by the taxpayer, will close 12 of its business services centres across the UK and put three under review.
RBS said the latest jobs cull would start next year and run through to the end of 2012
